What Happened Today - August

January - February - March - April - May - June - July - August - September - October - November - December

I have found my information for these pages from the following sites and applications:

August 1, 1790 - The very first United States census took place.  Thomas Jefferson, the Secretary of State at the time, was responsible for administering it.  Since the number of representatives for the House is determined by the population of each state, the census was extremely important.  Virginia was the most populous state at the time with over 747,000 people.

August 2, 1776 - On this day, the rest of the delegates from Congress signed the Declaration of Independence.  The states signed it from North to South.

August 3, 1492 - This is the day that Christopher Columbus left Palos, Spain on his first journey across the Atlantic Ocean.  Just imagine - he started on August 3, and did not sight land until October 12.

August 4, 1779 - The Battle of the Bronx is fought on this day.  The Loyalists were fighting the Patriots for control.  The Patriots end up winning, defeating the British (Loyalists) under DeLancey.

August 5, 1776 - General Greene suggests burning New York City to keep the British from regaining any foothold in the colonies.  Washington refuses to take this advice, certain the patriots can fight for the land and not only win it, but hold it.

August 6, 1777 - General Herkimer's men, over 800 of them, are ambushed as they attempt to help out at Fort Stanwix.  Herkimer is mortally wounded during the combat.

August 7, 1782 - Washington establishes the Purple Heart award to celebrate meritorious action during combat.  The names are placed in a Book of Merit, which ends up being lost until 1927 when it is re-instated.  The first purple heart awards are given to Elijah Churchill, William Brown, and Daniel Bissell, Jr.  They are the only recipients during the American Revolution.

August 8, 1776 - The British bring more troops into New York City.  They send for troops from the other states, determined to maintain hold of the area.  Washington is forced to re-evaluate his strategy for the attack.

August 9, 1776 - The British are assured the six  nations of Indians will support them and not come to the aid of the patriots.  They feel the only natives who will support the patriots will be those who have been converted by missionaries.

August 10, 1776 - On this day, London hears the news of American independence.  Many are upset that so many resources have been used to fight a battle which cannot be won.

August 11, 1774 - The Virginia convention agreed to refuse to purchase British goods as well as not raise prices as items became scarce. This was show support to the colonists as they were showing the King of England they would not be pushed around and forced to pay for the King's wars any more.

August 12, 1776 - General Washington writes that he fears New York will be blockaded by the British.  His men are getting sick and some are deserting.  His letter to Major General Lee proves to be prophetic because the British eventually take New York and General Washington is labeled a traitor to England.

August 13, 1781 - Colonel Harden and Brigadier General Marlon ambushed British soldiers at Parker's Ferry.  This battle helped the Patriots beat the British.  Cornwallis, in the meantime waited in Yorktown, hoping to close the Chesapeake Bay and cut the Patriots off from their supplies.  General Washington celebrated the victory at Parker's Ferry.

August 14, 1765 - Boston erects the Liberty Tree that shows Britain we are against the Stamp Act.

August 15, 1777 - A large fleet of ships arrived at the Chesapeake Bay to try to block shipping coming and going.  The ships did keep many supplies from entering Virginia.

August 16, 1780 - General Horatio Gates is defeated at Camden, SC by Cornwallis.  Even though he has twice as many men, many are captured or killed.

August 17, 1807 - Robert Fulton's steamboat 'The Clermont' travels up the Hudson River for the first time.  Why is this important?  his steamboat made traveling across the country easier.

August 18, 1587 - Sir Walter Raleigh landed on Roanoke Island, NC.  Four years later another ship landed to find nothing remained of the Roanoke colony.  The settlers were all gone.

August 19, 1779 - Major Harry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee attacks the British at Paulus Hook, NJ (later known as Jersey City).  His success here earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor and boosted the moral of patriots.

August 20, 1789 - George Washington moves his troops south to fight against Cornwallis.

August 21, 1776 - British Adjunct General Stephen Kemble wrote that all troops had arrived in New York - 11,850 foot soldiers, 500 artillery, and 12 light horse.  General Washington knew an attack on New York was coming.

August 22, 1777 - British colonel Barry St. Ledger abandons Fort Stanwix as General Benedict Arnold's army approaches.  (this was before Arnold became the famous traitor in history).

August 23, 1776 - The British landed on Long Island and Washington sent 6 battalions to reinforce the area.

August 24, 1775 - fighting begins in New York.  Many citizens flee to New Jersey for safety.

August 25, 1777 - Washington marched to Wilmington, DE to stop the British from attacking Philadelphia.

August 26, 1775 - Rhode Island Assembly sends delegates to the Continental Congress to suggest a fleet be built to protect the colonies.  Seems like sound advice.  Imagine if no one had suggested it!  The British fleet would have bottled up all our harbors and we would still be royal subjects of England.

August 27, 1776 - The Americans were defeated at the Battle of Long Island, New York.  General Clinton's troops attack the left flank.  General Sullivan was forced to surrender.

August 28, 1776 - Fighting continued on Long Island.  General Washington told General Heath to assemble all crafts to transport people.

August 29, 1776 - General Washington retreats from Long Island to New York City.  Washington stayed between the two, assisting his men.  Britain's General Howe failed to block the retreat which was a good thing for the patriots.

August 30, 1781 - The French fleet arrived in the Chesapeake Bay to help the patriots win the War of Independence.  The French were instrumental in helping Washington beat Cornwallis at Yorktown.

August 31, 1775 - With the expectation of war, a contract is entered into with Joseph Hallett for gunpowder and muskets.  The Patriots understood the war would be fought and it would not be easy.
